Nikon has announced a plethora of new Coolpix cameras, aimed at all types of consumers. It is a bold response to all compact camera manufacturers which launched new point-and-shooters earlier this year at CES 2013.
The Tokyo-based company was surprisingly quiet at the Consumer Electronics Show 2013. Despite the introduction of two new mirrorless cameras, Nikon did not make any other exciting announcements. Following the launch of the J3 and S1 cameras at CES 2013 and two new Nikkor lenses earlier today, the company unveiled seven new Coolpix shooters and three smaller siblings.
Nikon Coolpix S31 and AW110 / AW110s
The Nikon Coolpix AW110 is a rugged camera which is designed to resist in nature’s harshest conditions. It is a waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof shooter that features a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, built-in WiFi, GPS support, full HD video recording, 5x optical zoom, vibration reduction technology, and a 3-inch OLED screen.
The differences between the AW110 and AW110s are minor, but they mostly refer to color and market availability. The former will be available in three colors, while the latter will be available in up to five flavors. The other advantage of the AW110 over the AW110s is the addition of a “World Map” feature in the camera menu.
On the other hand, the Nikon S31 features a 2.7-inch 230k-dot LCD screen, 10.1-megapixel CCD image sensor, and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card support in a compact body that is lightweight, waterproof, shockproof and dustproof.
All of these cameras will become available in February 2013. The AW110 will cost $349.95, the S31 will cost $119.95, while the AW110s’ price tag will be announced soon.
Nikon Coolpix S5200 and L28
The next budget-friendly cameras in the Coolpix series are the S5200 and L28. The former’s spec sheet includes at 16-megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor, WiFi capability, Best Smile Selector, Quick Effects, Glamour Retouch, and a 3-inch LCD screen. It will become available this February in four colors for a MSRP of $149.95.
In a twisted way, the L28 features a bigger 20.1-megapixel CCD sensor, but it is cheaper as it costs only $119.95. It will be released next month in three flavors and it will feature 720p HD video recording, Smart Portrait Mode, Red-Eye Reduction technology, Skin Softening, Smile Timer, Face-Priority autofocus, and a 3-inch LCD display among others.
Nikon Coolpix S9500 / S9400, P520, L820, and S6500
Let’s begin with the Nikon Coolpix P520 which features a Nikkor 42x optical zoom lens and 18.1-megapixel CMOS sensor. It performs greatly in low-light conditions and it features built-in GPS and WiFi support, 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD screen, full HD 1080p video recording, and lens-shift vibration reduction technology with Active mode capability. It will become available as of next month for $449.95 in Black, Dark Grey, and Red colors.
The Nikon Coolpix L820 features a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor with 30x optical zoom, vibration reduction support, and a 3-inch LCD screen. Special effects are supported by this camera, including Glamour Retouch and Skin Softening. Its super-telephoto lens covers a wide angle between 22.5mm to 675mm. Black and Red models of the camera will be released this February for a price of $279.95.
Nikon’s idea for a high-quality compact camera resulted in the launch of the S9500. This Coolpix series device features 22x optical zoom thanks to a 18.1-megapixel BSI CMOS image sensor. Full HD video capturing is supported along with a 3-inch OLED screen, GPS, electronic compass, and WiFi support.
It will be released alongside its not-so-featured sibling, the S9400, this February for a price of $349.95. The Nikon Coolpix S9400 will become available in the same Red, Black, and Silver colors for a price of $299.95, but it will feature a digital zoom of only 18x.
Last but not least comes the S6500 compact camera. It is packing decent specs including 12x optical zoom lens, 16-megapixel CMOS image sensor, HD video recording, and built-in WiFi. It will not remain behind its brothers as it will be launched in select markets next month for a price of $219.95.
