The Canon 700D, aka Rebel T5i in the United States, has been officially announced as the flagship DSLR camera of the EOS Rebel lineup.
The Canon EOS 650D, referred to as Rebel T4i in the US, was revealed in June 2012. However, the Japan-based manufacturer has decided to replace it less than a year after it has been introduced on the market.
Canon 700D / Rebel T5i announced with 3-inch articulated touchscreen
Canon’s successor for the EOS 650D / Rebel T4i is called EOS 700D / Rebel T5i and is based on a very similar specifications sheet, but with a new 18-55mm STM lens.
The flagship camera of the EOS Rebel series features an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS image sensor, DIGIC 5 image processor, ISO range between 100 and 12,800 (which can be expanded up to 25,600 using the in-camera settings), 3-inch vari-angle ClearView II LCD touchscreen, and a continuous shooting mode up to five frames per second.
The Canon 700D / Rebel T5i also employs a Hybrid CMOS AF system, which can provide faster autofocus when using the device’s live view mode. Additionally, users will have access to a 9-point cross-type AF system, which should make their job easier in all photographing conditions.
New EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens available for the users
The Japanese manufacturer says that customers will have the option to bundle the camera with the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Canon’s new optic is based on the Stepping Motor system, meaning that focusing will be very fluent and silent.
The EOS 650D has been the first DSLR camera with a touchscreen ever. The EOS 700D also sports a capacitive touchscreen, which provides quick controls to the most important camera settings.
Rebel T5i’s touch-based display can be used for previewing photo effects, such as Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Fisheye, and Water Painting among others.
Movie mode available with full HD video and stereo sound recording
Moreover, the new DSLR camera is capable of recording 1920 x 1080p movies. In video mode, photographers can use the continuous AF tracking mode, a very useful technique when shooting active subjects.
Sound quality will be among the highest, thanks to EOS 700D’s integrated stereo microphone.
Other common camera features can be found in the Rebel T5i, too. The list includes RAW shooting, face detection, built-in flash, hot shoe for mounting extra accessories, red-eye correction, and multiple metering modes.
The camera also comes packed with an optical viewfinder, a shutter speed range between 30 and 1/4000 seconds, USB 2.0 and HDMI mini ports, LP-E8 battery, SD / SDHC / SDXC card slot, and optional GPS and WiFi (through Eye-Fi cards) connectivity.
