Canon has announced a new high-end lens for EOS full frame DSLRs in the body of the long-rumored and sought-after EF 11-24mm f/4L USM ultra wide-angle zoom lens.
This is one of the most rumored lenses ever. However, Canon has accustomed its fans with such situation, as the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM super-telephoto zoom lens has also been rumored for years before its announcement last fall. Nevertheless, the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM ultra wide-angle zoom lens is here to confirm a lot of the details leaked within the rumor mill, including its exceptional image quality and hefty price tag.
Canon introduces EF 11-24mm f/4L USM ultra wide-angle zoom lens
The Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens is a ultra wide-angle zoom optic designed for full frame cameras. It will offer a high image quality which will have minimal distortion across its whole focal range.
The Japan-based company says that this optic offers the widest angle of view for rectilinear full frame DSLRs thanks to its 126-degree diagonal.
It will offer a minimum focusing distance of 11 inches, making it perfect for up-close landscape, building, and street photography purposes.
The manufacturer says that this lens will be able to fit an entire stadium from above and that it can also be used for wedding photography as well as astrophotography.
Nevertheless, videographers will appreciate it, too, as it is said to be more than capable of “retaining straight lines”.
Multiple coatings added to the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens for maximum image quality
Its versatility is given by 16 elements divided in 11 groups. It includes four aspherical elements, one Super Ultra-low Dispersion element, and one Extra-low Dispersion element to minimize chromatic aberration.
As for ghosting and flare, they will be kept to a minimum thanks to several coatings, such as a Sub-Wavelength Structure (SWC), Air Sphere (ASC), and Super Spectra (SSC).
A Fluorine coating has been added to the front and back of lens’ elements in order to make sure that dirt, water, and fingerprints can be cleaned with ease.
The Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens features a constant maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the zoom range.
It comes with an Ultrasonic autofocus motor and an internal focusing mechanism. The former delivers smooth and silent focusing, while the latter makes sure that the front lens element does not move when focusing.
High-end EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens to be released by the end of this month
As expected from a high-end optic, the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens is weathersealed, so it will be a perfect match for the new 5DS and 5DS R cameras, especially considering its optical quality.
It measures about 108mm / 4.25-inches in diameter and 132mm / 5.2-inches in length. It is a bit heavy, as it weighs 1,180 grams / 2.60 lbs as well as a bit pricey as it will cost $2,999.
