Sony has launched its second A-mount lens of the day in the body of the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II standard zoom optic, which also delivers improved image quality.
Although photographers were expecting a new A-mount camera at the 2015 World Photography Awards, Sony unveiled a couple of A-mount lenses just to reiterate the fact that this system is not dead and that it will continue to be alive for quite some time.
After introducing the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II model, the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens has been announced, too. The second model also comes with enhanced image quality and faster focusing speeds when compared to its forerunner.

The new standard zoom lens replaces an older model, which is known for offering great image quality. However, the new Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens is said to deliver an even better image quality.
The optic features an internal design made out of 17 elements in 13 groups with two Extra Low Dispersion elements along with a couple of aspherical elements and a T* coating. Together they reduce ghosting, flare, distortion, and aberration.
Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens also features a Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM) that will provide four times faster tracking speed than its predecessor.
Shipment expected to begin this June for about $2,100
The focus system has a minimum focusing distance of 24 centimeters / 13.39 inches with an internal focus mechanism. This means that the front lens element will not move when focusing.
On the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens, users will find a distance scale and focus ring. Sony has confirmed that the optic has a 77mm tilter thread with an 83mm diameter. It measures 111mm / 43.7 inches in length and weighs a hefty 975 grams / 2.15lbs.
Just like the new 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens, the 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II offers a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 and weathersealing. The latter trait means that the optic is resistant to dust and water droplets.
Sony will begin selling the lens as of June 2015 for a price of $2,100 and users can pre-order it right now from B&H PhotoVideo
