Sony has unveiled an affordable lens solution in the 50mm range for FE-mount mirrorless camera users. The new FE 50mm f/1.8 model SEL50F18F is official and it is coming to a store near you this May.
It has been almost three years since Sony introduced its first two FE-mount mirrorless cameras. Right from the beginning, photographers have bemoaned the lack of an affordable 50mm solution.
Well, the complaining can stop now, as the PlayStation giant has just revealed the FE 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. It is a compact and lightweight solution that offers good image quality in order to continue the legacy 50mm optics, which are known for their versatility in photography.
Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 lens is an affordable, compact, and lightweight solution for FE-mount camera users
Mirrorless cameras are compact and lightweight. Their reduced dimensions are the main reasons why a lot of people choose to buy them as opposed to a DSLR. Casual photographers will also want the lenses they attach to their MILCs to be tiny and to not weight a lot.
The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 lens is the perfect solution for FE-mount mirrorless camera users who want compactness combined with performance. This lens is not only tiny, but it is also capable of capturing beautiful, sharp photos.
It features an internal design consisting of six elements in five groups with one aspherical glass element. The 7-blade circular diaphragm will deliver amazing bokeh effects and a shallow depth of field when choosing a fast aperture for portrait photography.
The optic might not be weathersealed, but it comes with a metal mount that is said to be robust, therefore it offers high durability. Despite its metal mount, the lens remains a lightweight product, as stated above, which weighs only 186 grams / 0.41 lbs.
While the maximum aperture stands at f/1.8, the minimum one is set at f/22. As for its dimensions, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 lens measures 69mm / 2.72 inches in diameter, 60mm / 2.36 inches in lengths, and has a filter thread of 49mm.
Photographers using E-mount mirrorless cameras with APS-C-sized image sensors will be able to attach this product to their devices. When doing so, it will offer a 35mm focal length equivalent of approximately 75mm.
The lens’ release date and price details have been confirmed, too. Sony will release the prime optic this May for a price of $250, while the FE 55mm f/1.8 Sonnar T* ZA lens continues to be priced around $1,000.
