Canon is aiming to take macro photography to the next level courtesy of the EF-M-mount 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens, which features two built-in LED lights.
The rumor mill has recently confirmed that Canon will launch its first macro lens for EF-M cameras. However, what most sources did not know was that the product will offer a special feature.
The press release and the official photos have confirmed that the new EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM prime will employ an LED lighting system. The lens has two circular LEDs in the front, in order to properly illuminate your macro photography subjects.
Canon announces its first macro lens for EOS M mirrorless cameras
Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens is the first macro optic designed for the EOS M system. It is compact and lightweight, just like the company’s mirrorless cameras, while also being collapsible.
The most intriguing feature of the prime is the Macro Lite flash technology. It consists of two LED lights designed for lighting up subjects. The company says that the system will allow photographers to freeze movement, so that subjects will not turn out blurry.
Another helping hand comes from the Hybrid Image Stabilization technology, which is borrowed from a bigger brother: the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM telephoto prime. This hybrid IS system will deliver up to 3.5 stops of stabilization.
The optic’s Macro Lite electronic flash technology also allows users to turn on only one LED at a time. Additionally, it offers two different brightness settings: bright and dim.
Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens will become available this June
The design of the macro prime includes one Ultra Low Dispersion element and a couple of aspherical elements. They will cut down all sorts of aberrations, including chromatic ones.
The new Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens will provide a full-frame focal length equivalent of about 45mm. The magnification rate stands at 1:1, so the optic produces life-size subjects.
Another special feature of this product consists of the Super Macro mode. Using it, photographers will be able to take advantage of a 1.2x magnification. In this mode, the minimum focusing distance stands at only 13mm.
A Stepping Motor is the autofocus drive and it is said to deliver quick focusing when capturing stills, as well as near-silent focusing when recording videos. Canon will release the lens sometime in June for about $299.99.
