The first photo of the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens has been leaked on the web along with some specifications of the optic, which is bound to become official in the near future.
Canon has been rumored to launch new 50mm gear for a long time. The first model to emerge was supposed to be the one with a maximum aperture of f/1.8.
It should have been unveiled in the first quarter of 2015 and released by the end of April 2015. It seems like the Japan-based company has decided to delay the process for a while, as the product is not here, yet.
Nevertheless, the plans have not been abandoned as the first Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens photo has been revealed. The image is joined by its specifications and by the statement that it will be officially announced within the next few days.
First Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens photo leaked on the web
The photo of the upcoming EF-mount 50mm f/1.8 STM shows that the lens has suffered some modifications when compared to the existing EF 50mm f/1.8 II, which is the best-selling lens at Amazon
The markings on the lens have changed and they come with the company’s latest font. A dark silver ring now goes around the optic, while the focus ring appears to be bigger and more comfortable to use.
There is an AF/MF switch on the optic, while an aperture ring is missing. Another thing that is missing is image stabilization technology, which is something that the rumor mill has already predicted.
Canon will announce the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens soon
Alongside the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens photo, the specs of the product have arrived, too. The product will have an internal design that consists of six elements arranged in five groups.
The lens can cover full-frame sensors, but it will be compatible with DSLR cameras featuring APS-C-sized sensors as well. The source says that the lens comes with a special coating that is “optimized for digital photography”.
A Stepping Motor has been added and it should provide quick, silent autofocus. However, as stated above, the lens supports full-time manual focusing.
The current generation weighs about 130 grams, while the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens will weight about 160 grams. The length has remained fairly equal, as the new model measures 39.3mm in length, while the existing unit measures about 41mm in length.
Canon will officially unveil the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM optic within the next few days, so make sure you check back to catch the announcement!
